Famous Meng Kee Satay Beehoon stall at East Coast Park Lagoon Food Centre closes after 30 years of business there. The owners, who are two brothers, were unable to continue the business due to ill health.

Mr Ng Hiok Meng, 60, was paralysed from a fall, while older brother Mr Ng Siaw Meng, 63, has stomach cancer.

Shin Min Daily News visited the older Mr Ng on Thursday, and discovered the reasons for the stall's closure.

Mr Ng said that he had to choice but to close the stall as both he and his brother met with mishaps just months apart.

To the many customers who would miss their satay beehoon, Mr Ng said he felt apologetic for being unable to continue selling the dish due to ill health. He thanked customers for their many years of support.

Shoebox homes might make bad investment idea

Shoebox homes might not be the best place to invest your money, Maybank Kim Eng has suggested in a recent report on real estate in Singapore.

The research arm of the bank has done an analysis on shoebox units, and found that the largest number of such units have been sold in the Balestier, MacPherson and Geylang areas.

While shoebox apartments may fare well in the rental market for urban centres, those in suburban places might not yield rental rates which are as high, analysts say.

In their report, Maybank Kim Eng questioned the viability of suburban shoebox units, which they say developers are "rushing to price at $1,500 to $2,000 per sq ft".

Minister for National Development Mr Khaw Boon Wan has warned on numerous occasions that the shoebox market for suburban areas remains untested and risky.

Echoing this sentiment, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said recently that it would intervene in the number of units developed in suburban estates.

From November 4, new guidelines to curb the development of shoebox units outside the central area will take effect. A total of 11,000 shoebox units are expected to be developed by 2015, with about 3,800 of them built outside the city centre.

Excessive development of shoebox units could also result in a strain on infrastructure, the URA said.

Niece raped by own uncle for three years

Her nightmare began in 2006 when she was only 10 years old.

Her mother had left home when she was nine, while her father worked long hours and was rarely home.

As her uncle, the man, who is married to her father's elder sister, provided the young girl with food and pocket money.

But he also did bad things to her.

For about three years, he would tell her to go to his bedroom, where he would proceed to lie on top of her.

Although she was frightened and felt pain, she wasn't sure what was going on. As he raped her, she closed her lips tightly to prevent herself from shouting from the pain and cried quietly.

Afterwards, he told her not to tell anyone about the incident.

She did as he had said because she didn't understand what he had done to her.

It wasn't until she was 13 and attended sexuality education lessons in school that she realised the horror of her uncle's acts.

He raped her five times between 2006 and 2009 - once in her own home and the rest in his flat.

On Thursday, her uncle - a 54-year-old married man with two children - was jailed 19 years for raping his niece. Anyone convicted of rape can be jailed up to 20 years, fined or caned.

National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has set a goal for Singapore's park connector network and it is personal: He wants to cycle through all 200km of it.

But it is not "a personal ego thing", he said on Saturday at a dialogue in Sembawang. Rather, he wants to see first-hand where the gaps are in the network and how to make it more seamless.

He has already covered 40km in three rides over the past week. His ultimate goal is a network that will allow him to one day cycle from his Ang Mo Kio home to his office in Maxwell Road.

He also revealed that he is mulling over the idea of making parts of the city "car-free" on weekends.

Paralympics: Pistorius shines as Games near end

"Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius on Saturday ended the last full day of competition of the London Paralympics by storming to victory in his favoured event, as most of the final golds were decided.

Pistorius, 25, had been favourite to retain his T44 400m title for single and double below-the-knee amputee sprinters being the only man in the field to run under 50 seconds.

The result never looked in doubt from the gun, as the South African struck out on his own to lead coming into the last half-lap and was roared across the line in 46.68 seconds by the crowd at the packed 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium.

"It was very very special to me," Pistorius told Britain's Channel 4 television after the race. "It was the last event of my season, the last event of the London 2012 Games. Just so special.

"It was my 11th time I was able to come out on the track and I just wanted to end and give the crowd something they would appreciate and take home with them."

BPL: Swansea's £2m Michu enjoying dream start

WHO DA MAN?
Swansea star Michu has revealed his joy at making a "dream start" to his career at the Liberty Stadium.

The 26-year-old is currently joint top-scorer in the Premier League alongside Robin van Persie after scoring four goals in three games.

Those efforts have helped the Swans to second spot in the top flight during the international break.

It's an astonishing start for the Spaniard since his bargain £2million arrival from Rayo Vallecano in the summer and the player himself is enjoying life at the Welsh club.

"It has been a dream start," Michu told Swansea's official website.

"The team has played very well. We have scored ten goals and only conceded two. To have seven points after three games shows we have done very well so far. We are playing to our strengths, and everyone is enjoying the way we play.

"We have some very good players here. I really enjoy playing with this team - the manager wants us to play football - pass and move, pass and move. I think everyone enjoys watching us play. The big difference for me is that in the Premier League there seems to be more space available for players to run into. In La Liga, it is very, very tactical which means you don't have that option.

"I'm really enjoying it. Everyone has their job, and they do it well. But we are not stopping here. Seven points from three games is great, but we have a lot of hard work ahead."

And Michu is grateful for the support he has received from the Swansea fans since arriving

While Swans fans are already singing about their new gem, Michu admits he's been blown away by the support of the Jack Army.

He added: "We don't have the money like the other clubs, but we have a full stadium every game and the supporters are so passionate about the club. That means a lot for a footballer, seeing the fans at every game filling the stadium.

"Even for the away game at QPR, we walk out of the tunnel and there are over 2,000 fans in the away section. They are amazing. When they shout my name I feel very proud. But hopefully we will give them a lot more to shout about this season."

Paralympics: Brazil bring home soccer gold (again!)

Brazil defended their unbeaten record in Paralympic five-a-side football, beating France 2-0 to clinch their third gold in three Games.

Gabriel Da Silva converted a first-half penalty after Ricardo Steinmetz Alves was brought down in the box, while Martin Baron deflected the rattling ball into his own net in the second period to make sure of the win.

Five-a-side football, which is played by blind and visually-impaired footballers wearing eye masks, with sighted goalkeepers, made its debut in 2004 at the Athens Paralympics and the South Americans have not been beaten since.

At this year's competition at the Riverbank Stadium in east London, they did not concede a goal, while France had also come into the final with a clean sheet.

But the scoreline could have been different had veteran goalkeeper Fabio Ribeiro de Vasconcelos not saved two penalties, from David Labarre and Frederic Villeroux.

At the other end, Alves had two shots saved by French 'keeper Jonathan Grangier and another blocked, while Goncalves twice came close but shot wide.

The two finalists had previously drawn 0-0 in the group phase but De Souza said his players had shown their class, pledging to follow up their success in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Copa America champions Uruguay slumped to their first defeat of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers on Friday as Colombia thrashed them 4-0.

Two-time world champions Argentina went top of the qualifying group with a convincing 3-1 home win over struggling Paraguay, for whom defeat saw them drop to the bottom of the table after six matches.

Atletico Madrid's much coveted striker Falcao got Colombia off to the ideal start against the Uruguayans with a goal in the second minute.

However, it was Teofilo Gutierrez who was to be the Colombians matchwinner as he struck twice in four minutes early in the second-half - Camilo Zuniga rounded off the stunning win in the final minute.

>>>

Argentina too benefited from an excellent early start as Real Madrid wing Angel di Maria struck in the second minute and although Paraguay equalised from the penalty spot later in the half further goals by di Maria's clubmate Gonzalo Higuain and then superstar Lionel Messi rounded off the victory.

Victory sees Argentina go a point clear of Chile and Ecuador, who moved into third with a 1-0 win over Bolivia in Quito - Uruguay are two points adrift of Argentina in fourth.

Thousands of Singaporeans will take part in the national conversation on Singapore's future over the next year.

This will be through at least 30 citizen dialogues and a national survey involving 3,000 to 4,000 people.

Apart from this, online platforms for discussions including a new website, www.oursgconversation.sg, were launched today.

The 26 members of the Our Singapore Committee include a taxi driver, an entertainment artiste, a social entrepreneur and government representatives.

A third year student at Singapore Polytechnic Ms Teng Zi Ying, 19, is the youngest member of the group while an artiste and host of variety shows, Ms Lim Ru Ping, 61, is the oldest.

The committee's work will be conducted in two phases.

In the first phase, broad issues will be discussed, with questions like "What kind of Singapore do we hope to see?" and "What are the changes needed to get there?" to be answered.

In the second phase, teams will be formed to involve more Singaporeans to tackle issues more deeply.

Euro 2014 WCQ: Big guns hit ground running

Most of Europe’s powerhouses enjoyed satisfactory starts to their qualification campaigns for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ on Friday. Italy, held to a 2-2 draw in Bulgaria, were the only traditional heavyweights not to claim maximum points.

The Netherlands and Portugal ground out tight victories over Turkey and Luxembourg respectively, while France picked up their first competitive win under Didier Deschamps.

The opening round of European qualifying matches was certainly not short of goalmouth action, with teams hitting the net 60 times in 22 matches.

Netherlands 2-0 Turkey, Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam
Goals: Robin van Persie 17, Luciano Narsingh 93

After suffering four successive losses, the Netherlands finally got back to winning ways, but their display versus Turkey is unlikely to have reassured their demanding supporters. Louis van Gaal’s decision to start Robin van Persie up front proved to be an astute one, as the newly signed Manchester United forward opened the scoring in the 17th minute, heading home a Wesley Sneijder corner.

Despite this early lead, the expected confidence boost did not materialise, as the Turks continued to impose themselves physically on the game, although their inability to deliver an effective final ball was badly hindering their attempts to equalise.

The pressure on the Dutch goal increased further in the second half, but it was the Oranje who finally killed the game off, Luciano Narsingh running through on the counter-attack to chip the ball over the advancing Turkish goalkeeper.

The other games

Group A
Wales 0-2 Belgium
Croatia 1-0 Macedonia
Scotland-Serbia (Saturday 8 September)

Belgium kicked off their campaign in impressive style by defeating ten-man Wales 2-0 in Cardiff. The Diables Rouges had two of their English Premier League stars to thank for the result, namely Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen. Croatia, meanwhile, struggled at home to Balkan neighbours Macedonia, but were rescued in the second period by a Nikica Jelavic header.

Group B
Malta 0-1 Armenia
Bulgaria 2-2 Italy
Denmark-Czech Republic (Saturday 8 September)

UEFA European Championship runners-up Italy fielded a youthful line-up in Bulgaria, but their revamped side was unable to produce a winning performance against a robust home team that thoroughly merited at least a point.

In spite of their superior technique and some clinical finishing from Argentina-born striker Pablo Osvaldo, who scored a double of which the recently retired Filippo Inzaghi would have been proud, the Italians had Gianluigi Buffon to thank for the result, his vital stops saving them from a surprise defeat. Consequently, the Armenians, whose 1-0 triumph in Malta came courtesy of Artur Sarkisov, now find themselves provisionally top of the section.

Group C
Germany 3-0 Faroe Islands
Kazakhstan 1-2 Republic of Ireland

Having rested numerous regular starters, Germany did just enough to beat the Faroes, with Mario Gotze and Mesut Osil on hand to unlock a resolute opposing defence. Kazakhstan flirted with victory against the Irish, whose fighting spirit produced two goals – a Robbie Keane penalty and a Kevin Doyle volley – in the final two minutes of play to complete an astonishing turnaround.

Group D
Netherlands 2-0 Turkey
Andorra 0-5 Hungary
Estonia 0-2 Romania

Hungary, on fine scoring form in Andorra, and Romania, who efficiently took care of business in Estonia via goals from Gabriel Torje and Ciprian Marica, will both be delighted to get their campaigns off to a positive start.

Group E
Iceland 2-0 Norway
Albania 3-1 Cyprus
Slovenia 0-2 Switzerland

Slovenia and Norway may live to regret their opening-day performances, in a section that could end up being the most closely contested of all. Iceland created the surprise of the night by overcoming an off-form Norway side, while Switzerland brought back a very important three points from Slovenia, Granit Xhaka and Gokhan Inler grabbing the goals.

Group F
Russia 2-0 Northern Ireland
Luxembourg 1-2 Portugal
Azerbaijan 1-1 Israel

Although his morale may not currently be at its highest, Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal back on track against Luxembourg, after the modest home team had surprisingly taken the lead. The Real Madrid man scored the equaliser before Helder Postiga completed the comeback after the break.

New Russia coach Fabio Capello began his reign in positive fashion as his charges saw off Northern Ireland 2-0, with the goals coming from Victor Fayzulin and Roman Shirokov. In the pool’s other game, Israel, who had initially gone ahead through Bibras Natcho, were forced to make do with a draw in Azerbaijan, following Ramazan Abbasov’s leveller on the hour mark.

Group G
Liechtenstein 1-8 Bosnia-Herzegovina
Lithuania 1-1 Slovakia
Latvia 1-2 Greece

A crucial second-half winner from the irrepressible Theofanis Gekas enabled the Greeks to secure a hard-fought win in Latvia, while Slovakia had to content themselves with a draw in Lithuania. Bosnia-Herzegovina recorded the highest margin of victory of the evening, demolishing Liechtenstein 8-1, in a match that featured hat-tricks for Edin Dzeko and Vedad Ibisevic, and a brace for Zvjezdan Misimovic.

Group H
Montenegro 2-2 Poland
Moldova 0-5 England

Fans in the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica witnessed an evenly matched encounter in which Poland obtained a deserved share of the spoils, but there was no such suspense in Moldova, where the English ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.

Group I
Georgia 1-0 Belarus
Finland 0-1 France

It was a good night all-round for France, who registered their seventh consecutive victory over Finland and welcomed back commanding midfielder Abou Diaby – who netted the winning goal following a fine through ball from Karim Benzema – after a long, injury-enforced absence.

Even more pleasing for Didier Deschamps would have been the news that Belarus, who have been a thorn in Les Bleus’ side in recent times, suffered a 1-0 reverse in Georgia, for whom midfield man Tornike Okriashvili scored a remarkable goal to break the deadlock, skilfully evading three defenders before slipping the ball past Belarus custodian Sergei Veremko.

The player
Daniel da Mota Alves, a 26-year-old Portugal native who was granted Luxembourgish citizenship in 2007, stunned his former countrymen by opening the scoring against A Selecção das Quinas. The relatively unknown striker has racked up 91 goals in 177 matches in Luxembourg, and bagged a brace in a friendly win over Slovakia last year.

The goal
Bulgaria 1-0 Italy, Stanislav Manolev 30
The opening goal of a pulsating 2-2 draw was scored by PSV’s Bulgarian defender, Stanislav Manolev, who brought the home fans to their feet by beating the otherwise excellent Buffon with a spectacular long-range shot. Spotting that the keeper was positioned slightly too far to his left, Manolev instantly let fly with a powerful effort that bounced over the Italian’s outstretched arms to nestle in the back of the net.

The stat
34 – The age of Frank Lampard who, 13 years after making his England debut against Belgium on 10 October 1999, helped himself to two goals against Moldova on Friday, taking his international scoring tally to 25 in 92 appearances, a creditable total for an attacking midfielder.

The incident took place last Thursday at 5am.

Madeline and her boyfriend, Alex, 17, were having a meal at McDonald's at Scape after a night out at the movies.

They were seated at a table outdoors.

Madeline had placed a cup of hot tea on the table and was about to tuck into her Fillet-O-Fish when she placed her elbows on the table.

"It happened so fast - the table slipped under the weight of my elbows, spilling hot tea on me," she recounted.

The private school student suffered first- and second-degree burns as a result.

The 16-year-old and her boyfriend claimed McDonald's did very little to help them, and her parents said they may take action against the restaurant.

But when contacted, McDonald's said it twice offered to send Madeline and her boyfriend to the nearest hospital by taxi, but they declined.

It also said it had checked the tables to "verify that they are stable and safe for use".

Malaysia's AirAsia is putting the finishing touches to a deal to buy up to 100 Airbus passenger jets as it expands internationally, sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The deal, potentially worth around US$9 billion (S$11.2 billion), is designed to fuel the growth of what is fast becoming a cluster of related airlines under AirAsia's founder Tony Fernandes, who placed a record order for Airbus jets last year.

If confirmed, the deal could will a setback to Canada's Bombardier which has tried to persuade Asia's largest budget carrier to choose its alternative new CSeries jet.

Talks are at the final stage but the Airbus deal will probably not be ready in time to be announced at next week's Berlin Airshow, the sources said, asking not to be identified.

In the 10 weeks the Washington County coastal community of Lubec in Maine has gone without daily police patrols, there's been something of a low-key crime spree.

The situation has deteriorated to the point where he claims that a pot of lobsters recently was stolen from the enclosed back porch of a Lubec residence while a woman who lives there was home.

With a population of 1,300, Lubec has no police department. For the past eight years, day-to-day law enforcement needs have been met under a contract with the Washington County Sheriff's Department. That $181,358 annual contract provided Lubec with an 86-hours-a-week, two-officer patrol system at a cost of $497 a day.

The town opted not to approve a new $199,000 annual contract proposed by Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith. Without the contract coverage, response to crime in Lubec is provided on an as-needed, emergency basis by the Maine State Police and by the Sheriff's Department.

Lubec resident Mike Pivirotto is a proponent of Lubec creating its own two-person police force, using the funds once allocated to the contract with the Washington County Sheriff's Department to hire and equip the two officers. He wants to set a goal of lowering Lubec's crime rate.

"We need a goal, and we need to work together with the police department we would create," he said Wednesday. "And we need professionals. Let's look across the country and find a police chief and let's hire an assistant chief. Two guys would be able to cover the 86 hours we were getting under the contract."

"When we borrow sheriffs from the county, you get officers that are not living here and don't work here every day. I want officers living here in Lubec as part of the community."

A Chinese military official has been suspended and placed under investigation over accusations of a drunken assault on a flight attendant, state media said Tuesday.

Fang Daguo was suspended from his job with the armed forces department of the southern city of Guangzhou, the state-run China Daily said, after an air hostess accused him of assaulting her in a dispute over his hand luggage.

The woman, Zhou Yumeng, had posted pictures on her Sina Weibo - a microblogging service similar to Twitter - showing injuries she said Fang inflicted, triggering uproar on China's popular social networking sites.

State-run news agency Xinhua said Fang and his wife "stunk of alcohol" when they boarded the flight from the eastern city of Hefei to Guangzhou, and that Fang grabbed Zhou's arm hard enough to bruise it.

"If it wasn't for us, you wouldn't even have food to eat," Fang's wife told Zhou, according to Xinhua.

Officials in Guangzhou's Yuexiu district, where Fang is employed, said last week an internal investigation had found him innocent, but changed tack after Xinhua disputed their account.

Innovation took a law-breaking twist when a car washing service tied up with a massage parlour to boost each other's businesses through a customer loyalty programme.

And the firms gave customer loyalty a new meaning by offering free sex after nine car washes.

That way, both firms could benefit from increased custom.

Or so they thought.

The fledgling three-month special car wash service came to a grinding halt on Monday night when police raided the massage parlour in Sunway Mentari, about 15 km from Kuala Lumpur, Malay Mail reported.

It was just another routine massage parlour raid, Selangor National Key Result Area (NKRA) Crime Prevention Division officer-in-charge, Assistant Superintendent Emmi Shah Fadhil said, until the team found out that customers who sent their cars to the nearby car wash were given a loyalty card each.

Car owners who did not want to wait for nine car washes for free sex could pay between RM130 and RM180 (S$52 and S$72) for immediate gratification at the massage parlour.

Women’s U-20 World Cup: USA edge Germany

USA overcame the odds to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win against champions Germany in Tokyo to claim their third FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup crown.

Germany went into the contest having defeated USA 3-0 in a group encounter just a fortnight ago, and without having conceded a goal in six matches at the tournament.

The match commenced in cagey fashion, perhaps to the relief of USA, given Germany’s blistering three-goal burst against Japan in the semi-final.

Germany caused several anxious moments for the opposition defence with crosses from either side, but the USA defence, led capably by skipper Julie Johnston, managed to deal with the danger.

Then USA finally made some attacking headway as Maya Hayes made a driving run and shot from her position on the right side of the forward line.

It proved to be a portent of things to come as right fullback Crystal Dunn used her pace and power to cut in from the flank and pull the ball back for Kealia Ohai, who coolly swept home from near the penalty spot.

The tempo picked up in the second half but despite Germany shading possession, they were rarely able to pierce the USA defence.

“This victory is the reflection of many people’s effort,” said USA coach Steve Swanson. “We have a very together team. We faced some adversity in the group phase, and the players learnt from that. Our character showed up tonight.

“Since the quarter-final, we played against Korea DPR, Nigeria and Germany, three group winners. And we won, it says a lot about the quality of our team.”

New idea to queue for: SIA's panda collectibles

Singapore, it seems, has been hit by a panda craze since Kai Kai and Jia Jia arrived from China on Thursday.

Collectible panda plush toys, which resemble the two pandas, created a snaking queue at Plaza Singapura. The shopping mall was one of six locations island-wide where the toys were being sold.

Singapore Airlines is raising funds for children with special needs through the sale of the toys. Each panda plush toy costs S$20. All funds will be donated to the Community Chest.

Each member of the public may acquire a maximum of four panda toys, while stocks last.

Community Chest General Manager Tan Bee Heong said funding requirements for children with special needs have increased by 47 per cent compared to last year, so it was timely to raise funds for the 36 programmes supporting children with special needs under the care of Community Chest.

The Community Chest aims to raise S$72.3 million this year to help support 82 charities in running 219 critical social service programmes.

The funds raised will benefit over 300,000 people, including children with special needs, youths-at-risk, persons with disabilities, lonely and frail elderly and families-in-need.

Letting singles buy new flats - not so soon

http://www.todayonline.com/Hotnews/EDC120908-0000069/Letting-singles-buy-new-flats,-with-restrictions-first

In his post, titled 'Singles, I hear you', Mr Khaw reiterated that his priority has been to focus on helping first-time married applicants get flats first. "And we have produced good results," he said.

"I have now begun to focus on second-timers. These are still early days, and results will take a few more months to show. This means going into next year," he said.

But it has also allowed him to begin to think about how to address the singles' housing needs, though he noted that it was not something he could "hurry too much" over.

"Firstly, I need to focus on the immediate needs of the second-timers until they are largely addressed next year.

"Secondly, I want to have a better handle over the likely additional demand for new HDB flats when we open the scheme to singles. The additional demand is unlikely to be small and if we misjudge, the interests of the married couples, especially those with children, may be adversely affected."

One practical approach, given the "the difficulty of assessing demand", is an incremental one: "We can start the scheme with some initial restrictions (eg on flat type). This way, we can better ensure the scheme meets the needs of the singles, while still protecting the interests of the married couples."

Another way is to launch a larger number of BTO flats next year, but "question is what should that magical number be. This requires some study, and market research. Hence, I need some time," he said, encouraging Singaporeans to continue giving their views.

Currently, singles can only buy resale flats and they must be above 35 years of age to do so.

Any change to the rules that will allow single Singaporeans to buy new Housing Board flats likely won't happen anytime this year, but National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan says he has started to mull over how to address their housing needs.

In a blog post today, he noted that some of the comments and suggestions surfaced since the Prime Minister's National Day Rally have been "quite sound". Those he cited:

- Allowing singles to buy Build-to-Order flats should not be at the severe expense of married couples;

- There must be some restrictions on the type of flats that singles are allowed to buy;

- Singles should not be allowed to rent out the flats;

- If two singles with 2 BTO flats subsequently get married, one of the flats should be sold;

- There must be a difference between the subsidy received by a single and a married couple.

Mr Khaw also highlighted two other suggestions made: That flats sold to singles should be of shorter lease and longer mode-of-payment, and that a higher age threshold (that is, over 35) should be imposed on such BTO applicants.

A record seven religious organisations are taking part in a carnival to promote religious harmony in Singapore.

Organised by the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC), this is the fourth time such an event is being organised.

Known as IRCC@Heartlands, the two-day carnival hopes to showcase the various religious, ethnic and community groups in Singapore. It is also the first time the event involves three IRCCs.

Apart from booths that teach children about different religions through games and activities, one of the main features at the carnival is the scaled-down replicas of places of worship.

The two-day roadshow ends today at the Albert Mall.

The first Singapore Global Fire Fighters & Paramedics Challenge was held yesterday morning at the National Service Training Institute.

The challenge is a platform in which SCDF personnel from the fire stations and Operationally Ready National Servicemen from the Divisions pit their strength, speed and skills against one another in challenging events related to fire-fighting and rescue scenarios.

It is also a platform for the international participants to share their knowledge and best practices with one another through friendly competition.

The challenge consisted of two segments, a local segment and an international segment. About 100 fire fighters, paramedics, and ORNSmen participated for the local segment, and 3rd CD Division emerged as the overall champion.

About 50 elite rescuers from Singapore and nine other countries participated in the International segment. The countries include Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Macau SAR, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

A composite team approach, which involved teams made up of representatives from different countries competing against each other was adopted for the international segment. This allowed for the cultivation of comradeship amongst international participants.

Events included fire fighting and rescue, road traffic accident, collapsed structure rescue, and medical treatment and evaluation.
